Last updated December 12, 2023. A power steering fluid leak when the car is off can be caused by a damaged seal or a loose connection in the power steering system. Other possible causes include worn-out hoses a damaged power steering pump or faulty steering rack. Leaks generally occur when the engine is running and the system is under pressure.

Mercon ATF, but from what I've read it's no longer available ( not sure ). The auto parts stores sell P/S fluid of course, but I have no idea if it's the same as the Mercon

When the fluid is low, it allows more air to enter the system. This combination of low fluid and lots of air will make the pump malfunction and make noises. The simple way to fix the problem is to put more power steering fluid back into the system. But first, you need to find out why the original fluid fell to a level lower than it should be.
The rebuilt power steering pump was installed and fluid was filled and the system did not leak any fluid BUT the steering was still a little stiff but consistant. There is a "Flow Control Valve" under the pressure port union (do a search) on the P/S pump that is probably a different "letter" value (ie; flow rate) than what was in your old pump.
Back at home, let the engine run and turn the wheel about 15 times from left to right and right to left without hitting the stops or locks. Shut off the engine and open the hood. Inspect the fluid in the reservoir. If the fluid looks foamy or you see bubbles in it, there's air in the system, and you need to bleed it.

Step Three: Remove the fill plug at the top of the transmission. Step Four: Insert an automotive funnel into the opening, and add a small amount of transmission fluid specific to your vehicle. Step Five: Recheck the inspection port. Once a little transmission fluid starts seeping out, let it pour until it stops.

Over the past few weeks I've experienced a 'judering' in the steering, and having taken the mini to my local dealer, they found the fluid low (I'd not seen any residue on the drive or where I park at work) and topped it up. They also booked it in for a check-up. At the checkup they found somehthing
